Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton is encouraging people throughout the Parkes electorate to use Australia Day to celebrate the contributions they each make to our great country.
“On Australia Day we acknowledge and celebrate the positive contributions many different people have made to this land,” Mr Coulton said.
“We all have something we can celebrate today, and that will look different for every person and family. I am grateful for the contributions so many have made to our country, from Aboriginal Australians whose families have been here for thousands of years, to all of the wonderful people who continue to migrate from overseas.
“We all share a stake in our future. We all have responsibilities to each other. We all have a unique appreciation for this country we call home.
“Our history has been complex, and the birth of this nation has been a painful one for many people, which is still felt today. This day is an opportunity to reflect on our nation as a whole and how we can improve it.
“In 2023 we can and should think about how we can continue to move forward both as one people and as many. We should think about our achievements, focus on our strengths, and draw upon what works to make sure every person in Australia can celebrate being part of this country, no matter their background.”
Mr Coulton said Australia Day is an opportunity to reflect on both the past and the future, as well as to appreciate the different perspectives of all the people who make up our multicultural society.
“We all bring different perspectives to Australia Day and what it means to be part of this nation,” Mr Coulton said.
“We can learn from each other and seek to grow together to make this an even better place.
“To everyone in my electorate, I say thank you for your contribution to our great country. To our new friends and neighbours, I say welcome.
“Happy Australia Day.”
