George a credit to Coonamble community
08-February-2012
Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton has congratulated Coonamble’s George Baker for his success in the ABC’s Heywire competition.
Heywire is an annual competition for young people from regional Australia and is designed to give rural and regional youth a chance to have their say on issues that affect them and their communities.
George entered his story titled “Two Friends” into the Heywire Competition. The story documents the friendship of two strangers from different generations in a country town.
This week George joined 34 other young winners from rural and regional Australia in Canberra to attend the Heywire Regional Youth Summit.
The Heywire Regional Youth Summit provides the winners with the opportunity to receive leadership and media training, and develop project proposals to improve life for young people in regional Australia.
Also as part of the Heywire forum George visited Parliament to meet with Mr Coulton and a number of other Members of Parliament.
Mr Coulton said it was a great privilege to meet such a wonderful representative of the Parkes electorate.
“George must be congratulated for his success in helping to put the spotlight on such an important range of issues for rural and regional areas,” he said. “He is a wonderful ambassador for the Coonamble community and I wish him the best of luck as he heads to Sydney to study Journalism at University.”
